I prefer the way diagonal parking looks in the downtown area.   But I read with some amusement on the chatlist the number of people who are against parallel parking downtown because they are not capable of doing it.   If you are unable to parallel park or incapable of learning to parallel park in a standard space please turn your keys in.

Here is a little how-to for those that need a refresher:

Parallel parking will reduce the amount of spaces available. Also, I read they want to put parking around the circle. Have you ever watched a towed vehicle or 18 wheeler negotiate a traffic circle, it isn't pretty.

It'd be great free entertainment. Out-of-towners find the circle hard enough to navigate as it is. Imagine if there were cars parked along it.

Wasn't there an initiative a couple of years ago to make downtown safer for pedestrians?   I have to think cars on the circle will create lines of site problems.

I don't understand the logic for this...we don't have enough parking as it is now...now it will be less...smaller circle...who's approves this cr*p?

There is a truck route around the circle that is simply ignored. My guess is once the circle is altrerd the trucks will be forced to go the 902/87 route around the circle  on 15-501

I read they want to put parking around the circle.
I believe this is 100% incorrect. Some ideas proposed for possible improvements downtown definitely did not include that.

Pittsboro could look to the future and build a parking deck. Gets cars off the street.

Driving through downtown Pittsboro, I am focused on watching the parked traffic (and who is trying to back out) and the flowing traffic. Backing out of a parking space can be tricky if you are parked next to a large vehicle that blocks your view of oncoming traffic. Many times I see the passenger on the street helping the driver to back out of their space. Reducing the number of spaces available on the street (perhaps parallel parking) combined with a parking lot nearby would give folks a better opportunity to see what establishments exist in downtown Pittsboro.

Some poster on the Chatlist said that soon all cars will have backup cameras so this won't be a problem. Backup cameras wont show what is coming up the road, just what is behind you.

There is actually a good bit of parking in PBO, it just may require a bit of walking if the mission is the main 'strand' shops. For those able to do so, just consider it part of your exercise for the day Smiley
Having said that, a fresh paint job to mark those spaces would be nice to make them bit more clear.
Had a friend whose rear bumper apparently 'infringed' a tad of the chained off area downtown (where old PTA was), but was not blocking any entry got towed. Boo! Swore off PBO shopping after that Sad

Well regardless of the source, it's not happening and was never planned, as was confirmed at Monday night's Town Board meeting.

I personally park and walk as I consider those Main St. diagonal spots dangerous to get out of, and I drive through there with great caution. It also annoys the heck out of me that people will park long vehicles there, and fairly large ones in the short spots, and when there's a big truck coming through you have to wait to let it pass.

Thank-you for remembering my question here, acorn. I never heard anything about this either and I live in downtown Pittsboro. I don't like those diagonal spaces on Hillsboro St. I agree that getting out of them is worth your life, plus it really blocks your line-of-sight when you are coming out from a side street/driveway and one of those long tall vehicles is parked there.
