I have heard a lot of people in Chatham say the go to the Hillsborough Sportsplex for swimming and skating and Bball.

MMmmmmmm. Why not build one here! The kids could use the excercise, county makes money off fees, people stay here and spend, and kids would not be so bored and have to be sriven out of the county to shop in orange after a day at the Sportsplex.

All it would need is a pool and a basketball court and maybe a game room for ping pong or such. We could get rid of the obesity coordinator too and and this would create about a dozen jobs at a better rate. You would need lifeguards, swim instructors, referees, bball coaches, locker attendents and the list goes on.

This would be good for all!

BTW it is adults and kids I know that go there.

Are you asking for the Chatham County taxpayers to build, own and fund this?

Well it may have to be unless they have an owner or sponsor. I do not know how Hillsborough does this. I think it belongs to the town , maybe not.
This would be more beneficial than having the bus. They want to fight obesity , this is part of the answer. There is not even a public pool here for kids. The pool at Farrington belongs to the Duke Fitness center and many cannot afford the 60.00 a month.

Sell memberships and week or day passes and it will end up paying taxpayers back if done right.

Hillsborough's spotsplex started out as a private venture and was eventually absorbed by the government.

I also think that if you check the financials of the complex you will find that Hillsborough sinks more money into it than they make.

Chatham Parks & Recreation runs a very successful recreation basketball league. It has the highest participation rate among kids in the county.

Pittsboro has refurbished their public basketball courts by the Sheriff's department. Have you gone by and taken a look?

Siler City also does a nice job with their parks and rec department. There is a public pool located in Siler City. Their seasons keep getting shorter because of increasing expenses.

The Chatham YMCA has been hoping to get a new facility built around the Powell Place / Lowes sector.

No.  We don't "may have to".  I don't care what "they want to fight".

NO.

This is not within the purview of government, for one, and if there was money to be made with a facility of this type, a private owner would/will do it.

NO.

I was just thinking it will be all in one place. A lot of Pittsboro kids cannot get to Siler for the pool.

And 1911a you are against it? It would pay for itself and if this stupid BOC is not business friendly how are people going to spend money here? Some of these wasted tax dollars can be redirected.

Sometime you taxes go to something you do not use. I have to pay for schools and I have no kids.
This was just an idea. The many folks who go to the Hillsborough one say they would stay here if all were in one place.

I'd say no for government funded.   The Pittsboro pool is still here, and Jordan Lake.

Not sure where you are coming from with all this stuff. There are plenty of sports and recreation options available if you know where to look.

There is a pool in Pittsboro, there is a pool in Siler City. People in NE Chatham can go to Heritage Hills across the county line.

If kids don't get off their video games all the sports and recreation facilities won't help a bit.

Not sure how you are going to create a dozen jobs out of a $50,000 obesity director position. (I am not even sure why we need an obesity director to begin with)

Where is there a pool in Pittsboro?

There is a private pool club near 87/Graham road.  Or east of CCCC across 87.  This year it was $350ish for the swim season.

Later,
Dan

Best deal around. Silly to complain about no public pool when we have it!

p.s. I'd like ice skating and a pool for swim teams, too, but this is a huge venture. The Y has been working on the pool thing for years. it will come to pass....eventually. But I don't think it would "pay for itself" for a long long time.l

Well folks just an idea. I have had over 18 people tell me they go their because it is all in one and it is a public pool not private club like we have here. And the skating rink is a huge draw,

It was just an idea to keep folks here.

Lol.  Am I against it?  What does NO mean?

I'm not "against" a private party doing so, but not government - even though, yes, sometimes taxes go to something "you do not use", like the schools.  I'd like to see that limited to as few items as possible and having to pay for one - I have no kids either - does not rationalize paying for any other.

"Wasted tax dollars" need to be redirected to the taxpayer pocket, not to an government-sponsored entity that may or may not pay for itself - did you not read Gene's post? - and that competes with anything in the private sector for dollars.

All ideas for ways to add to the quality of life are worth airing, and worth serious consideration. Thanks for an interesting idea, Mary. It may not be the time, but its time could come.
