Title: firewood wanted
Post by: ppittman on September 19, 2017, 12:19:47 PM
Hi, I am in search of seasoned firewood. Hardwood (oak and/or hickory, NO sweet gum). I need 14" length, and can split it myself if need be. Interested in 1 or 2 cords. Please reply or message me if you know where I could find some. Thanks!

Too bad you don't want sweetgum. I have a bunch of poplar and sweetgum trees I need down. It wouldn't be good for this year, but they'd be great for next year.

Sweet gum is not fire wood, it is a fire hazard. It burns hot and fast, too hot for wood stoves. Some suppliers like to mix the sweet gum in with the hardwoods, and if you accidentally grab a piece it will definitely grab your attention once it is in the stove. UGH. Sweet gum does not split, it kind of shreds in any direction it pleases. Sweet gum trees are good for shade, til the gum balls start dropping.

Lol, burning sweet gum is like burning rubber bands and probably worse for a chimney/flue than pine. Poplar can burn well if a hot fire rolling already, but tends to fire off sparks. Any/all better for a campfire that's then doused with water before turning in ;)
