Title: Confusing road sign
Post by: Bill Crawford on September 18, 2017, 06:42:57 AM
Here is something I've never been able to explain. There is a sign on Thompson Street, not far east of the Chatham Forest entrance. I understand what "Reduce Speed Ahead" means, it is a call to action by the driver. "Reduced Speed Ahead" is not. Nearest I can figure, it is an alert to a change in the physical universe going further west. Possibly a warning about reduced energy and greater mass?

In your proposal,  "Reduce speed ahead," the word "your" is elided: "Reduce your speed ahead."

In the sign's "Reduced speed ahead" more words are elided, but particularly  "limit": "Reduced speed limit ahead."

Not sure i would  find either confusing, but your wording would be one "d" cheaper.

Let me translate what it means for that exact stretch of road; " Speed Trap ahead, PBO police on the job and keeping us all safe from people zooming down the road at 32.1 mph."    ;)

I understood it's probable intention. However, I have difficulty understanding why a road sign would need an 'elision' to be properly followed, when clarity is available *and* one letter cheaper.

But I enjoyed the vocab refresher. That is a word I haven't encountered in years.

The further question that might follow is, if you are part of the change in mass/energy, would you even notice? If somebody doing their laundry at Clapps saw you going by, would they? It sort of makes you want to be a patent clerk.

Good point Bill. As a driver I have found that I can't accurately tell - hence the tickets I've accumulated over the years ;'}
