Title: BBS Google Advertisements
Post by: Ice Pilot2 on June 16, 2017, 06:47:10 AM
Can someone please tell me how to turn off the Google Ads that pop up on the top right here on the BBS?  ( and at the bottom )   Thanks so much!

I use Pale Moon for a browser and Ghostery and Adblock to kill the ads. Works pretty well (nothing is perfect!)

Thanks - you went over my pay grade though!    I use Google Chrome and sometimes Firefox.  Will look in to ad blockers.  Thanks again.

AdBlock Plus is available for both FireFox and Chrome. I have used it for years and it is fantastic.

I use Adblock Plus on Firefox.

A couple of sites I frequent have little nagging popups that remind me that the site gets paid by the ads. I sent messages to them saying that I wouldn't mind the ads so much if there weren't several of them at the same time that have heavy media content. Sometimes the ads tie up so much bandwidth that I don't get to see the main content. Or I'm trying to listen to something, and the ads keep forcing their audio content on over what I'm trying to hear.

Ads shouldn't irritate the potential customer. I don't know why the advertising agencies can't figure this out.

https://techcrunch.com/2017/04/19/google-said-to-be-planning-a-built-in-ad-blocker-for-chrome/

Google said to be planning a built-in ad blocker for Chrome

"If Google offers its own ad blocker in Chrome, targeting specific types of ads that users find particularly annoying, like pop-overs and autoplaying audio and video, those users might never seek out a third-party ad-blocking extension, the logic goes. The WSJ reports that Google doesn’t love the deals it often has to make with third-party blockers like Adblock Plus, which require payment of fees in some cases to whitelist ads by companies like Google who are willing to pay for the privilege of working around their filters."

Chrome is Google, Google is an active participant with AdChoices, so I doubt very seriously the "new" adblocker designed by Google for Chrome will block AdChoices. I downloaded the "Adblock Plus" for Chrome and Firefox after I saw it here, works like a charm.

I don't mind the ads so much. I always try to click once in a while if I see some content that may be interesting. Checking out a new product or service for half a minute is a small price to pay for a great service like the BBS. It may be free to us, but I guarantee it isn't free to Gene.

I do.  They distract and take up too much "bandwidth".    I will take this time to thank Gene again for keeping this BBS up and running.  Hopefully it will survive this period of low activity and attract more and more diverse participation.

BTW,  a BIG THANKS     :toast:
to all of you that mentioned Adblock and Adblock Plus.   Added it to my system in under two minutes and it is doing a great job.   I am quite surprised.
