Folks,
On another thread, we starting talking about the sign out in front of NorthWood. It just keeps nagging at me. I did not want to Hijack that thread and just wondered if I am alone or all wet.
Wow. I am learning more and more.
The sign is still displaying last weeks info as of yesterday at about 3:00.
Maybe we should change the letters to read:
SIGN CLOSED; Not Enough Community, Staff, or Student Body Interest.
SIGN Operator Needed; Apply Within
Please do not blast me with a barrage of posts about “there are much bigger and more pressing issues. Or, go do it yourself etc” Please. I really do understand those things. I just want to see what the online community thinks.
It just jumps out at me. The sign is so visible. When you know it is old information and that it just does not seem to matter to anyone, it’s just kind of sad. That sign is the only part of NHS the general public can see regularly. It is like the window into the soul of the school. It is neglected and apathetically ignored by the very folks that arguably should not. Just seems to me, like a very visible and glaringly obvious symptom of serious fundamental issues that need attention and could benefit from effective leadership.

You are right. Everett, that we need to pay attention to noticeable things like signs, even if they seem unimportant. I've mentioned the broken window theory on this board before - if people notice that small things (like broken windows in a neighborhood) aren't taken care of, then they start believing that no one notices or cares, and bigger problems (like break-in and drugs in a neighborhood) start occurring more frequently. Our schools need to "sweat the small stuff" so that our students and the community knows and believes that we care and that someone is paying attention.

My offer for some plant material to spruce up the sign area still stands. I had pulled together about 30 or so things, but never heard back from the school. Their "plan" was to get some students to determine a time to plant and let me know when to deliver the plants. I can recheck with them to see if still interested. I didn't want to be a pest in calling over and over.

And that was my point when I posted earlier.
I drove by that sign for a decade, broken and dirty and thought, good God, if the sign looks that bad, what is the school like...then I found out.
It was the PTA who took the sign on, not the school or the county. So my question is WHY must parents do SO much?
It is the AD's job to take care of the sign. If HE wants to delegate it to kids, which is what HE told me he was doing, than that is his choice. But one way or the other it comes down to the AD. Either he can do it himself or delegate it. It has to be someone on site, imo. If games/events are changed or canceled someone cannot be driving down to Northwood to update the sign.
I think the community has done enough as far as the sign is concerned.
We're getting ready to need 500 community mentors from across the county to help with the mandated Graduation Project. We can't find more that 3 parents to attend Boosters. Folks do not give or do like they should. This sign is certainly important, but I don't see it being a community job.
I am frustrated already with the athletic department not supporting boosters or efforts made by parents to clean up and/or raise money. The hint of doing one more thing, still just rubs me wrong.

That is good news. Maybe, the plan being worked is to update the board/sign on Thursday afternoons?

Thanks to whoever updated the sign.
BTW, what is really sad is that one of those parents that attended the Booster Club meeting doesn't have children at the school anymore-but always is there to help. Glad he was there and still helping the community.
See you all tonight at the game.

Not really sad. That is actually positive. In many communities, that have active and effective Booster Clubs, The Club will have a Board of Directors. Some Board's bylaws REQUIRE the members to not have a child at the school. Really. A high percentage of those members are usually alumni of the school. I am not sure how many NHS Alumni are out there and still local, but that would be another good shout out that might prove effective. ( I know DKEMOM, it has probably been tried 4,232 times over the last 11,000 years by 987 people and my hint is not rubbingly appreciated! But hey; “ RUBB'n' is POST’n !! JOKE JOKE JOKE trying to lighten up here.)

The thing that bothers me most about the sign is the use of text message words, like UR. It's a place of learning. Please don't try to convince me it saves time. I used to be the person who put the info on a sign at my old school....putting your instead of ur would take all of 30 seconds.

Not Sad that he attended, sad that he was one of only three that attended the booster meeting. I am sure there are alot of alumni working, nice to see it and kids really appreciate it too.
Mmaybe there isn't enough letters for the sign? BethC, not sure.

Heck, I don't text, I have a hard enough time trying to decipher these momo's vanity license plates while at a traffic light I learned real quickly as a parent keeping an eye my child using IM on the internet. POS=parent over shoulder that little brat Just advise for parents to learn some of this stuff but PTSA did a great job on cleaning that sign up, it used to look like a old drive through menu

Back to the sign, I hope it will be a point of pride in appearance and updated information.
