http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2002/3/31/52900.shtml Force may be a slight bit strong. How about Strongly Encourage so they can show a high percentage of employee participation.

An easy way to learn more about most nonprofits is to go to Guidestar on line. It offers free viewing of Form 990. You can register for free and search for the name of the non profit and then look for the link to the 990 report. You can look at the Chatham County Council on Aging, local, state and national organizations, local and United Way of America, lots of others. The 990's show the compensation of the highest paid officers above a certain amount, lobbying $$, cash assets / reserves. lots of info.

Hmmm, a link to an article from 2002 saying the Boy Scouts didn't want to allow homosexuals and that the UW might pull funding as a result of it. Interesting article you chose to link to. What's your point in posting it? Are you suggesting that the UW is wrong to require that the organizations it funds agree to be non-discriminatory? It's not the fault of the UW that the scouts decided to discriminate. But anyway, I'm still waiting for that list of companies that force, err strongly encourage, their employees to give to charities.

I am not going to give you a list because it is not necessary.
I have been with several companies where we have a staff meeting and HR strongly encorages participation even if it is only 1 or 2 dollars. Other family and friends have had the same experience.

it is those big fake thermometers with the "goal" at the top popping out. NPR has a goal for every fund drive, so do sales teams, and ACORN. it is a motivational tool.
I don't like peer pressure, either.

I have worked for companies that make it quite clear that everyone is expected to give the UW their 'fair share'. I quit giving to them way years ago. I don't need a charity middle-man. I can give directly to the charities of my choice, without paying some third party to manage and disburse it.

The last hospital I worked for let ALL EMPLOYEES KNOW you were expected to donate "your Fair share" to the UW drive...it was implied that there HAD to be 100% participation. And there was lots of pressure for you to give enough that it was an automatic draw on your paycheck.
I can not say it came from UW it came from the hospital...but the pressure was there...and you knew it would directly effect you if you did not do it.

I am happy to say that my employer holds a UW funding drive, and points out the merits of donating even $1 per pay cycle, but doesn't hold it over our heads. Some folks I work with cannot donate $50 at one time, but sure can donate $2 per pay period.
If you have questions about the Chatham County United Way, call its director, Dina Reynolds. I know she can talk about their administrative costs, and its percentage of the total budget.
Most importantly is the fact that you do give to those organizations in need, whether you do it directly or through UW. As someone whose parent goes to the Council on Aging (a member agency of UW) regularly, I appreciate it.

United Way does use a small portion of your donation for administrative costs, but it's not outrageous.
I think you're being unfair to an organization that exists to do good and DOES a ton of good, Silk_Hope. You're certainly free to donate directly to organizations that interest you, but running down United Way? really?

Hardy Boy is spot on. What is important is to give, be it directly, through an agency or via such as "Taste of Chatham". The avenue is an individuals choice and all good intention! Now, I will head to P'boro today to COA with canned goods etc. (no can of worms included in the twist this thread took!)

I am not in any way taking the good works the UW does away from them....I just know there are places where a lot of pressure is placed on employees...I always gave and felt the money was spot on in its good works...the convenience of a little from your paycheck worked well for some people BUT your company really should always make it volunteer not uncomfortable.

That's a problem with the employer, not with UW.

I agree and said so in the first post...this is not UW it is the company in partnership with UW.

DkeMom, thanks for the original posting making folks aware of the cutbacks and the need. Made it to one grocery store today to take advantage of some good buy/purchasing power. Plan to hit another tomorrow and deliver my "bounty" to COA afterwards. Thanksgiving is coming! Think about it!

It's really Angel that got the word out to me and I just thought I knew the place where some good folks hang out sometimes.
When we aren't bickering about politics and schools and whatever else, we all have the same commonality.....we care enough to have opinions.
We care enough about our community to be knowledgeable (or pretend to be) about the issues.
We care enough to step away from the computer and do something to help our fellow Chathamites.
I think that's pretty cool.
Thanks to all of you for helping our seniors and thanks Angel and COA.
