Neighbors

I is with sadness I need to let you know there was another robbery last evening ( Thurs) at 5:30 ish on Winding Branch Rd.

We have very particular information for you but mostly we want you to be aware that you need to let your neighbors know if you are expecting any kind of truck or repair or delivery.  Otherwise neighbors should call police if there is an unknown vehicle in the area.  Even if they just drive in the road and back out....

This is very concerning because in this robbery the owner walked in on the robbers.  There was a  fairly new Dodge White pick up truck in the driveway with "Murphy's Construction" on the truck.  The NC plate # is BP8643.  The owner parked behind the truck and walked in the house.  The robbers ( 1 Caucasian 1 African American) were upstairs rummaging through the rooms.  They ran when the owner came in on them and he chased them but when they got to the truck they pulled out a gun and told him to move his car ( he was blocking in their truck).  He did and they took off.  But he had all the info first.  Again it seems like they pried open a back window with a shovel and got through that way.

What is scary is the weapon and the fact that they were so brazen as to not even try to hide the vehicle.  So...  we do need the neighborhood watch and we do need to to spread the word to our other neighbors who I don't have e-mail for.  Please let them know of this situation.  Beverly Miller is working with the sheriff's dept to set up a date and time and place for us to meet to hear about the neighborhood watch.

We all need to be suspicious of vehicles that don't belong and to let our neighbors know when we are going away.  Many of us are not home during the day but if we are be aware of our neighbors homes as well.  If you have an alarm start setting it ... if only a deterrent to the robbers who invade our peace! (I am lazy about this but am going to do it now!!)

Again, share this info with your neighbors..   this is now the 4th one on Lamont Norwood recently and the 3rd in our small neighborhoods in the last 5 months...

Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the heads up. That is scary. Good that the owner got the vehicle plate etc., but NOT GOOD to have entered the house. A miracle they don't get shot! I believe I would have just left the car blocking the truck and walked down the street a ways and called the law to come check it out.

This kind of stuff just makes me angry, people work to hard to have there stuff stolen, let alone have a gun pointed at you on your own property.  I'm glad no one was hurt though.

This is from the Chatham Chatlist less than a month ago -

Robberies off Mann’s Chapel and Dollar Road

From: Jan
Subject: local robberies

In response to the post about local robberies, a home in the Chatham subdivision (off Mann’s Chapel and Dollar Rd, near Twin Lakes Golf Course) was robbed last Sunday.

On our very active neighborhood listserv, a neighbor posted this description of a van that appeared to be casing houses on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

“Monday early afternoon (2:30-ish timeframe)… White older model (late 90’s boxy style) minivan (maybe a Chrysler) with a grey plastic front bumper (like it had been replaced) with a guy in the front seat with light-ish hair. Drove stop & go down the road. Stopped in front of the houses.  Waited, drove 10′ forward, waited, moved 10′ forward. All the time looking around and at both houses. Neighbor showed herself, made eye contact w/ driver, and waved. Driver immediately put car in reverse and sped back to the stop sign out of view. The van was seen scoping out houses AGAIN Tuesday.”

The neighbor has reported this description to the Sheriff’s dept.

Have the police made any progress in making an arrest? The license number and car make/model seems like a lot of information.

I have seen that "Murphy's" van in the last week or so driving up near Cole Park.  Noticed it cause of the faded painted name.  Gives me the shivers.  Folks, watch out for your neighbors.  Better to go ahead and call 911 if you think it may be suspicious activity than to wait.

I saw the truck at Cole Park area also Becky. I guess it seemed sort of odd to me, because they were driving so slowly and seemed to have no destination in mind. They almost hit me ("scoping" look around, as though looking for unlocked cars or something).

Sad to report, another home was broken into today at the end of Lamont Norwood near Jones Ferry Road.  A dark colored 98-99 Honda Accord was seen in the driveway of the home about 10:00 am today; 2 shotguns were stollen, many dvds, jewelry and who knows what else; the house was DESTROYED on the inside. The robbers kicked in the back door; even had time to eat food from their kitchen.  I feel a neighborhood watch is a really good idea, but is it enough? They broke into this home during the middle of the day, and the home is not even 50 feet from the road, no trees or anything. I think the only solution is going to be to catch who ever is responsible, and I am not sure the Sheriff's department is working as hard as they can to find them. Reportedly, they had 14 other cases they had to investigate before they would even look at this case? How long is that going to take? How many more homes? How much longer until someone is seriously hurt or worse?? This is a serious issue.  From what I have heard, this makes the 2nd or 3rd home on Lamont Norwood, Frosty's store was broke into on jones Ferry road (within 3 miles), another home on Jones Ferry Road, a home in Strowd Mountain, and the others listed on here. We are talking about maybe a 10 mile radius with 7+ breakins in the last month? Something must be done.

I hate to say it but IMO LE just doesn't focus on solving breaking and entering as much as they should.

I wish they would shift resources away from the war on drugs to solving real crimes like breaking and entering but unfortunately they garner more press and publicity by cutting down marijuana plants than they do by solving house robberies.

Ain't that the truth.  Yesterday morning there were 3 sheriff cars in the same area on 15-501 stopping speeders. They weren't even in areas where there have been accidents.  They need to leave speed enforcement to the SHP and focus on preventing crime and catching criminals.

Perhaps Breaking, entering and robbing isn't as important to investigate because you we all have sufficient Home Owners Insurance to cover any losses!  We'll all be just fine if we just place our claim and get new stuff................[end of sarcasm]

I worry about my 11 year old Petey the Boston Terrier.  No way is he a protect/attack dog but a break in/robbery might literally scare him to death.  Or some mean robbers could hurt him.  I have seriously considered bringing him to work til these folks are caught!

If you do a bit of research I believe you will find your assertion to be incorrect.  Only a very small subset of speeders are criminals.  Below defined thresholds, speeding is a civil, not criminal, violation.
