I've eaten there twice, it's okay. I got spoiled by NYC deli's when I lived there for a bit, so anything is going to pale in comparison.
For a "southern deli" it's not bad.

Doubtful, but there's always a faint hope.  As for the "guest" part, my people settled in Chatham Co. in 1780 or so, if we're still guests after all this time, then I just don't know what. |

Face it, WPF, there are just some things that will always be best regionally. Barbecue in NYC is lousy as is authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cooking. Creole cooking is always a sad imitation outside of Louisiana. And you're not going to find a good corned beef sandwich made from Boar's Head pre-packaged meat (which seems to be what all the "best" delis in the South serve) instead of a kosher brisket cooked in house. The marble rye local delis seem to favor will never match authentic NY rye. |

It was meant as sort of a joke, although it is a little annoying to get stuck behind some people in the deli section that have to have their pastrami cut just to the right thickness or their sandwich is ruined.
With all of the people that have moved to the surrounding areas, why has no one ever opened one of these authentic NY deli's that so many people miss? I have an idea about the answer, but I want to see other's first.

Streets Deli in Chapel Hill on Raleigh Rd. came about as close as I have seen here. The owners were from NYC and their offerings were authentic. They cooked their own briskets and knew what you meant if you ordered a corned beef dressed. They started too big in a high-rent area hidden away from the traffic of 54 and their money ran out before they could build a solid customer base. Damn shame they didn't make it.

Getting back on topic and ignoring the never ending War between the North & South diatribe, I was driving by this morning and was pleasantly suprised to see it open on a Sunday!!! I had a coffee, which was good and plan on going back to eat soon. The place looked great, clean and open, very comfortable. The owner was super nice, how refreshing from the usual "we really don't need your business" attitude that tends to run rampant lately. I wish them the best of luck!

I got fresh chewy/sticky plain bagels there today....excellent. The blueberry one lacked a strong blueberry taste...fair.

According to what the owner told me, the bagels are brought in from New York. Kinda wonder about the freshness. But the place is super clean, has a nice selection of salads and sandwiches. I hope they are successful.

What else do they have at breakfast besides bagels? We went out for breakfast this morning, but wanted a full breakfast so we didn't try Modern Life. (menu not posted yet)

My plain bagels were finished cooking while I waited. They were made on site for sure. |
