Every year, a pair of bluebirds nests in the martin house we erected long ago to attract Purple Martins. The martins never came, but the bluebirds love the accomodations. And a pair is actively at work as I type, with the female doing most of the nest-building.

That's largely due to the fact that the male has lost his little blue-headed mind. Our garage has always been near the martin house. For years. This year, the large windows in back (designed to let in light for hubby's workspace) have attracted the attention of Mr. Bluebird.

I've heard of cardinals arguing with their reflections in windows. Assuming they see an intruder, they throw themselves at their own reflections repeatedly, attempting to drive off the upstart -- and failing, of course.

But I've never seen a bluebird do this. Until now. I cannot persuade my little blue friend that he is wasting his time. His mate flutters over every once in a while and tries to enlist her guy's help with the nest. But he is devoted to the fight against his own reflection. I think we are going to have to temporarily paper over these windows on the outside. It may be the only way to get this confused bluebird to give up his battle.

He even flew into the garage yesterday looking for his enemy. Fortunately, he flew right back out when he couldn't find his foe.

Always something crazy going on. Yesterday, one of the nesting red-shouldered hawks buzzed our house when it noticed us watching it through our binoculars. Yes, the bird hormones are raging!

A few years ago, we had some bluebirds that would sit on the side mirrors of our F150 & stare at themselves. For a long time. They left their marks down the doors to show us how long they visited. My husband finally put some of his old white socks over the mirrors to foil them. Birds are funny. And the truck looked pretty funny too.

my big red parrot gets real upset with the male cardinals at the window feeder this time of year, and they get upset with her. just in the spring, thank goodness.
