Can we all agree that along with the failure to detonate the explosive, a massive security failure took place.

I've noticed that the health care bill thread may be taking something away from this topic, where a reid/pilosi led congress has detonated their device.

He got on board in Europe--they certainly failed.  It's worth noting that the security required to make commercial air travel truly safe is also such a brake on traffic flow--or so expensive in qualified personnel, or both--that the world is unwilling to accept the costs of adequate security.

And at least this time, our can-do Murican get-up-n-go-ness kicked the guy's butt on the plane, and everyone landed safely.

It's also worth noting that there have been hijackings since the '70s, and that as early as 1972, terrorists attacked the Olympic Games and killed several Israeli athletes in their quarters, on world-wide TV.  Nothing changed after 9/11.  We live in a dangerous world, and it's been that way for quite some time.

I have to agree with Beel on this one.  There is only so much that can be done, esp in a free society.  I for one, am only willing to sacrifice so much freedom for security.  Esp., since I think we can only be so safe.

I agree with Beel!

Though this should be proof that all of the existing security just might not work, so maybe we should revise/back it off.

Better yet, maybe we should publicly stone the guy as a deterrent.  He'd do it to us...

Listening to the radio today it is apparently the case that more layers of "security" are being laid down in reaction to this event.  Laptops can no longer be open within one hour of landing.  Perhaps the Western world will manage to destroy its air travel system trying to protect it from lunatics (terrorist lunatics, and the other varieties).  But as I saw somewheres on the net, we already take a pretty significant risk flying around at 30K feet in an aluminum tube being directed by an air traffic control system older than most of the passengers.

Getting to the airport 3 hours early, not being able to move around or read or even sit on your hands is going to make that 6 hour car ride more enjoyable, ultimately the short run plane trips will become a thing of the past.

Is security measures on rail systems like those for air travel? Could they be an easier target?

I took Amtrak from Durham to Charlotte a couple of years ago and there was no security check.

Sure, if I can carry a concealed weapon.

Trains are an easy target for bombings, any 18 wheeler could be used at an at grade intersection or the rails could be sabotaged.

Whilst everyone is thumping their chests and all het up about airport security, South Carolina Senator Jim Demented is preventing the appointment of a new head of the TSA and the Republicans are blocking the bill for security improvements. What the hell is wrong with them?

Do not believe the lie. No vote was ever scheduled by Harry Reid. And the hold on the nomination is about the refusal of the nominee to answer questions.  There IS an advise and consent element to nominations. If he will not answer questions, while applying for the job, we should NOT consent to his taking power. It seems he was asked a very simple question about whether he supports unionizing the TSA and he refused to answer.  Letting a bad appointment sail through without facing questions does NOTHING to improve our national security.

Bulldoody. Its politics plain and simple. If he wants the questioned answered why doesn't he let the confirmation hearings proceed and ask the question there? Just more of his grandstanding.
