From CCS press release:
Due to the recent passing of Gerald Totten, the Chatham County Board of Education currently has a vacant seat.  Totten’s term was due to expire in late 2010 so the Board will name a person who resides in the current Board of Education district 4 to fill his unexpired term.  Between January 4th and January 22, the Board will make an application available to the public at the central office in Pittsboro and on the school district website at www.chatham.k12.nc.us under “Board of Education.”  Below is information about the process and timeline.

Process
 Announce the vacancy and process to fill the seat
(local newspaper, local radio, school district website, word of mouth)
 Provide application and procedures for interested parties (applicant to reside in District 4)
 Set deadline to accept applications
 Conduct Board of Education meeting to review applications
 Potentially interview a candidate or candidates
 Make selection (majority vote)
 Conduct orientation for newly selected board member
 Administer oath of office to new board member

Timeline:
Monday, January 4 – Applications available at the central office and on the district website
Friday, January 22 - Application deadline
Monday, January 25 - Special Board meeting to review applications at 5:45 p.m.
Monday, February 1 – Possible interviews at Board work session

Given the other resolution to make the school board districts match the county commissioner districts, I would suggest that people that live in current BOE district 4 AND current BOC district 5 (precincts - former North Siler City, Albright, Hadley) consider applying for the open seat. The board will likely (like any board) consider where the candidates live, so that incumbents can run for reelection without running against each other.
http://www.chathamnc.org/Index.aspx?page=411

fyi - filing period for BOE (currently 2 seats in District 4 and 1 in District 3) and BOC (Districts 3, 4, and 5) begins Monday, Feb 8 at noon, and ends Friday, Feb 26 at noon.

Here is the link to the application to fill Col Totten's seat on the school board.
http://www.chatham.k12.nc.us/board/docs/Application_to_fill_Vacancy_BOE_Seat-2.pdf

Applications are due in the Central Office by 5 pm, Friday, January 22. The board will hold a special meeting Monday, January 25 from 7-9 pm to review the applications, possibly interview applicants (you will be notified in advance), and to vote to fill the vacancy. The new member will be sworn in at the meeting Feb 15.

I urge anyone in school board district 4 who is concerned about education to apply, particularly people in the northern part of that district (since the board has stated a preference for someone who will not be in the same district as Deb McManus if the district lines are changed to match the commissioners' districts.)

Also, anyone in school board district 3 (Moncure west along the southern part of the county) - there is no word yet if the commissioners have the authority to change the school board districts. If they do not, that will be an open seat, because Kathy Russell will be unable to run in that (her current) district. (The board of elections discovered that Kathy actually lives slightly outside of that district, something that they or Kathy were not aware of previously.)

Munn, Did Ms. Russell move recently or was her original election in error?

The Board of Elections has better technology now than they did in 2006. Based on the new maps, Kathy does not live in District 3. The Board of Elections allowed her to run in 2006 because based on the mapping they had then, they thought she lived in that district.

I have heard of one person who applied, but I have no official source. The applications will be discussed next Monday night (1/25) at a special board meeting at the Central Office. This is an open meeting that anyone can attend.

jgushie,
Soon, probably in the next couple of months, the district will hire a principal for Pollard Middle School. That person will then hire a staff, some of whom will be transfers from other school. No word on the process - I'll let you know when I hear more.

The board meeting to review the applications is Monday, Jan 25 at 5:45 at the Central Office in Pittsboro. There are 5 applicants:
Jonathan Hart
Carlos Simpson
Gary Leonard
Mary Harris
Trudy Walters

Here is the link to their applications - I think this is a very strong pool.

Interesting maps for the proposed BoE redistricting:
