Video of November's Woods Charter School Board Meeting

As many of you know, I am constantly looking for ways to improve communications and getting more information out to the public.

I am well aware that many school age parents can not make it to school board meetings. But they certainly would like to know what goes on at these meetings.

Chatham County schools does a good job publishing extensive minutes of their school board meetings. You can find them on the school system's web site.

As secretary of the Woods Charter School Board I am trying to improve our school board meeting minutes “so that a person not in attendance would have a reasonable understanding of what transpired. Such accounts may be a written narrative, or video or audio recordings.” G.S. § 143-318.10(e).

With our school board members working together for the good of the Woods Community I am sure the Woods School Board will get to that point.

It is neat that North Carolina's Open Meetings Law allows anyone to take notes, and/or make video and/or audio recordings of public meetings.

Working within the spirit of that law I video recorded the November Woods Charter School Board meeting and have posted it on the web. Now Woods parents and community can see and hear what went on at the school board meeting.

I have split up the school board meeting video into 20 minute "bite-size" segments. You can find them at

My next project is to make audio of the meetings available as podcasts via iTunes.

Woods School community members are welcome to drop me a note and let me know what they think.

Amazingly inefficient meeting that clearly illuminates many reasons more people do not participate in the process with active involvement.  Picture is worth a thousand words or in this case 10,000 words and lots of interesting body language.

Thanks for posting it. Please keep recording Gene.

Some of the stuff discussed sounds somewhat mundane, but I guess those are the things that school board need to address.

I don't have children attending Woods, but it is nice to take a peek inside.

Are Chatham County Schools thinking about videotaping any of their school board meetings?

I have attended many Woods school board meetings as well as many Chatham County school board meetings. Woods' meetings are no more inefficient, though they often entail much more detail about what is happening in the school (since they have 500 students v 7000+ in CCS schools).

I've been to some county commissioner meetings too. They are also long and drawn out. That's how these things work.  It's enlightening to attend these types of meetings, and I wish more people would.  I'll ask if CCS would post audio tapes (which are already made).
