So, I was having an unpleasant day, and decided to treat my wife to a steak sandwich at the Soda shop, but it turned out that they now close on Mondays.  We were disappointed, but had heard good things about Virlie's, so just crossed the street and tried it for the first time. 

We met a lovable waitress named Frankie, who made us feel like old friends from the moment we entered. She was bright and happy, and informative as well.  She filled my coffee several times, took care of special requests, and introduced us to the owner, Chris as well.  I had the Reuben and loved it. It comes on a home-made rye bread, and it was AWESOME.  They have a really broad menu of different types of items that make it possible to please all different types. (The breakfasts look fantastic, and I am sure to go back and try them.)  We even splurged on a dessert, which was almost sinful. It was serious chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you are a chocoholic, this is the dessert to indulge yourself with.

My onion rings were perfect, and my wife raved about her fries. She had just a simple cheeseburger, but it was really thick, I think 1/3 pound, and had a healthy slice of onion on it, per order.  (Some cooks act like the onion is being deducted from their wages, but we could not have been more pleased with this team. They actually have two kitchens there, and do serious dinners on Friday nights.  Frankie told us they even have poker games for points there, twice a week, and was proud of the fact that one of their players had made it all the way to Las Vegas, up through the ranks. 

The place gave off a homey atmosphere.  They were starting a pot of chicken a dumplings as we left. They do a different home made soup every two days.  It is nice to have a local place we can feel comfortable eating in.  My only regret is in not having tried it sooner.  If you haven't tried it yet, I suggest you do so at your earliest opportunity. I cannot imagine you being disappointed.

Oh, and even though we ate like pigs at a trough, it was $18 for both of us, meals, drinks, and dessert! Now that is a fair price.  They even do takeout and accept phone orders.

Great CHF...I just missed you this afternoon...I love the atomsphere and the food at Virlies...Frankie is a great waitress and Chris and Meagan are wonderful folks...I have yet to have a bad meal there...I will admit that their breakfast is killer...bacon cooked to perfection and the waffles are the best.

Glad you took the time to try it...hope to see you there soon.   Pam

That hashbrown breakfast had my mouth watering. Wish I could have turned back the clock. They stop serving breakfast at 11Am because of the grill space, but it looked fantastic.  I can
t eat too many waffles anymore, but I love them too.  (Admittedly, i am still a fat man at heart!)

I always liked the place back when it was the Scoreboard, but it's a much better restaurant these days. We haven't had a bad meal there.

We've been 3 x and had very good experiences as well.

It's really nice to have a good local option that has a "down home" feel to it.

With some places in P'boro, you are never quite sure what you are going to get service or foodwise, but Virlie's seems to get it right consistently.

Tommy and I just got back from Virlie's for our "date night" which we haven't had in months. If anyone is going out of town to get a great meal for a very affordable price you are seriously missing out on this fine place that is right in our hometown. Virlie's food is more scrumptous than any fine resteraunt I've ever been too. Everything was delicious from the salad to the dessert. Tommy had the steak and I had the salmon. Not only was it a great meal but it was in a great homey environment which didn't make you feel uncomfortable like some resteraunts that have made me feel. The funniest thing was the size of the bread they give you. A flashback of the Flinstone's came to mind. Thank you Chris & Megan for establishing this fine place we will now call our "date night" place!

We always enjoy our "date nights" at Virlies...but this week was our anniversary so we went on Thursday night for our 21st...as always the food was great and we saw old friends and it is just like a great reunion of friends old and new...these folks know how to welcome you to their establishment.

We finally made it for breakfast today and the loaded hashbrowns are for me.  Wife had the omlette and she was pleased. Our waitress was new, but very nice.  Several different people stopped by our table to fill coffee and tea for us, and check on our needs. They have a pretty good system, where everyone works together to see all are cared for to the greatest degree. 

Another table had the same suggestion we have made about their breakfasts, since they are so very good, folks would like to have them all day long. But, Chris says the grill is just not big enough to do both breakfast and lunch at the same time.  Different temperatures required, I guess.  Perhaps if we keep them busy enough he will eventually enlarge the place and get a bigger or second grill.

Clearly, my wife and I will try to do our part. We feel like family there.  This is clearly our favorite local restaurant now.

Another table had the same suggestion we have made about their breakfasts, since they are so very good, folks would like to have them all day long. But, Chris says the grill is just not big enough to do both breakfast and lunch at the same time.  Different temperatures required, I guess.  Perhaps if we keep them busy enough he will eventually enlarge the place and get a bigger or second grill.

Clearly, my wife and I will try to do our part. We feel like family there.  This is clearly our favorite local restaurant now.

Yes..cooking breakfast all day in a small area of the grill is a problem...when i worked there I enjoyed doing breakfast...it is my favorite meal to prepare and folks really enjoy a good breakfast....the heat for burger meat and chicken has to be so much hotter...then if you try to cook eggs they will scorch before they get done inside and I would never eat an egg that has been scorched...it is not good...so goes the problem...we keep them busy and maybe they will get a bigger grill.

Yes, he tried to explain that to me. He is being as responsive to his customers as he can.  Most of my cooking is done in a skillet, and since I eat my eggs over easy, I do not worry about getting them done. That is the equivalent of RARE, I guess.  I eat then runny on my hashbrowns. So temps have never been a problem for my cooking. Of course no one in their right mind would allow me to cook in a restaurant environment either. I cannot cook to order, only to my taste.   But that is what makes them so great. These folks can make it just like I like it or just the way the wife likes it, even though we are opposite ends of the spectrum.  My beef still moos and my eggs still run. Hers are cooked to death.  And Virlies team does EXACTLY what we each order. 

We had so much fun both times.  Has anyone noticed how good the coffee is too?  I am not a coffee snob, but it is every bit as good as the coffee specialty shop I go to.  And they keep it full and hot too.  I always just get regular coffee and lots of cream, but it is not bitter at all, just fresh and good. Probably a reflection of how often they are making it.  I could go there just for that and to visit the friendly folks there.

I have never been there except to grab a Coke under the previous owner's time. Based on CHFs opinions, I may just have to check it out with my daughter some time.
