Backup quarterback Harold Baldwin had to step in for starter Sam Griffin. Harold scored on a 2-yard quarterback sneak on fourth down in double overtime, leading the Chargers to a 6-0 win over Cedar Ridge. The win secured the Northwood Chargers second place in the Carolina Nine 1A/2A conference.

Baldwin the hero in OT for Northwood

With the score tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, Northwood (10-1, 3-1) got the ball first. The Chargers couldn't move the ball past the 10-yard line and missed a 29-yard field goal that would have given them the lead. But Cedar Ridge (7-4, 2-2) failed to take advantage.

The Red Wolves ran the ball down to the 1-yard line, but on fourth-and-goal decided against trying a field goal. They tried a Jake Geary run instead that ended with a fumble in the end zone.

Aaaaarrrgghhh...... Congratulation Chargers!........

I have a hard time with this new conference alignment.  Carolina Nine.....with only four (4) conference games for the entire season.  Tough to be 10-1 and second place.

The Conference Champions are South Granville.  They are 8-3.  They are 4-0 in conference play.  They happened by when we had a quadruple dose of turnoveritis....so they account for our one loss and it sealed our fate. No chance for even a share of the Championship.  Hence my Aaaaaaarrrggghhhh.  Oh well.......

Great Season, so far though.  All the best in the playoffs Chargers!

Sam had to sit out Friday night's game. He was on the sidelines during the game.

Senior Harold Baldwin scored on a quarterback sneak on 4th and 2 on the last play of double overtime to lead the varsity football team to a 6-0 victory over Cedar Ridge Friday night in Hillsborough. With the victory the Chargers clinched second place in the Carolina 9 Conference and earned the right to host a first round 2AA playoff game this Friday night versus Northeastern High School at 7:30.

The Chargers forced the second overtime when A.J. Farmer recovered a fumble in the end zone on 4th and goal from the one yard line on the last play of the first overtime. Throughout the game, the Chargers defense shut out the Red Wolves and held them to just over 100 yards total offense on the night. Ryan Seymour collected an interception for the Chargers, while many other Charger defenders contributed to the outstanding defensive performance by the Chargers on the night.

Shannon Peppers, Dylan Davis, Ryan Seymour, Brandon Suarine, and Paul Shackelford played well from their linebacker positions. Terrance Gordon, Donyea Rhodes, Dylan Davis, Blaine Rhyne, Ryan Seymour, and Brandon Saurine each had quarterback sacks for the Chargers. Ryan Seymour, Shannon Peppers, Jamaal Baines, Tevin Page, Dylan Davis, Tra Chandler and Terrance Gordon each had tackles for losses for the Chargers.

The Chargers' defensive linemen controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the night as Jamaal Baines, Tevin Page, Donyea Rhodes, Terrance Gordon, Blaine Rhyne, and Forrest Rhyne dominated at the line of scrimmage.

On offense, Shannon Peppers rushed for just under 100 yards on the night. Tra Chandler and Ridge Smith had several nice returns in their kickoff and punt return duties throughout the game.

With the victory, the Chargers improved to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the Carolina 9 Conference. The Chargers earned the number 5 seed in the 2AA playoffs. The Chargers host 7-3 Northeastern High School this Friday night at 7:30 in the first round of the 2AA State Playoffs.

Video from Northwood vs Cedar Ridge double overtime on YouTube

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/eFgClu9ZFXk&amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/eFgClu9ZFXk&amp;rel=0</a>

A couple of folks from Cedar Ridge were not happy that their coach opted to have his son attempt to run in a Touchdown in the first overtime. Their kicker is apparently pretty good and he was unlikely to miss what was essential a PAT. The player fumbled the football and Northwood recovered. This led to a second overtime, in which Harold Baldwin reached across the goal line with the football to win the game, 6 - 0.
