Was driving down 15-501 today, just south of the county-line park and ride at around 8:00 a.m., on my way to visit a friend in Fearrington...

I passed the Magic Bus at the Mann's Chapel stoplight, and could clearly see the vast, vacant emptiness of a deserted bus during the morning rush-hour.

That is one big bus to be driving around empty.

If this was really a worthwhile venture, and so popular as to justify the cost, why aren't we treated to daily ridership numbers?  I can guarantee that we would be if it was actually working.

Maybe we can do what California did and have an E-bay rummage sale and use the money for something worthwhile?

What's desperate? If you don't like transit then perhaps you will tear up water and sewer lines that are not serving any users or have a paucity of users... Wink

It seems on every issue ideology comes first with no flexability. Populism runs across the political spectrum. Rigor mortis conservatism is just on of its dead ends. Pragmatism works a lot better.

It isn't that people don't like "transit".  It's that they don't like the fact that we are spending a lot of money that could have best been spent elsewhere.  Or not at all.

Putting a bus system that isn't doesn't make economic sense is anything but pragmatic.  

You are desperate because instead of being able to make the case for the magic bus, you resort to insults and vague notions of "good things to do" without the facts to support them.

You trot out this example all of the time (like Linda Felt's Police Protection) when ever you need a straw man to distract yourself from reality. 

A Bus and Rural Delivery have nothing to do with one another and are thus no part of the same argument.
One is mentioned as a fundamental function of government in the constitution:

Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the United States Constitution, known as the Postal Clause or the Postal Power, empowers Congress "To establish Post Offices and post Roads". (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_Clause)

I have yet to find the Magic Bus clause in the same constitution.

The postal clause may have been more important when communication methods were limited, and thus it enhanced freedom of speech.  Today, that requirement may be less so, given the other venues.  As to what a "postal Road" is, that seems to be from before even my time.

I believe it should be right before the spring elections.

It will be interesting to me to see what PBO does about their contribution when the time comes.  The commissioners were pretty clear about it being a trial effort, and if they are not seeing the riders, they will not commit any more money to it.

That doesn't sound right. I think the $40,000 is just from Pittsboro. Anyone know for sure?

$40,000 could buy a used van and probably cover the gas and repairs on it for a whole year, the second year well, if you don't add a vehicle the cost will go way down.

Could it be possible that a part of the reason for low ridership on the Chapel Hill Transit bus is because Chatham Transit Network is also running the same route?  I wonder what the CTN numbers are for the same routes?
