I was on my way to work this morning traveling north on 15-501 and came up beside the long anticipated and greatly debated Pittsboro bus. I just had to slow down and see the massive amount of people riding it - and lo and behold - it was packed to capacity with 2 lonely riders and a driver! I am so thankful to the Commissioners and Mayor Voller that our tax dollars are going to such great use to assist these 2 riders and giving the bus driver a job. This is sure to improve the local economy!

I am opposed to the bus because I do not believe it will save fuel, but...it is WAY too early to know if it will work. If ridership is to meet hoped for numbers it will take a while. My heart hopes it works but my brain doubts it.

When I have a leaky faucet at home, I sure don't want to wait 6 months to fix the problem. What is the magic number of riders that makes this project a success or failure? Oh wait - no one took the time to do these kinds of studies before doling out our money for this bus! Too bad!

the magic number will be 6 riders and they'll call it a success. This would be funny, if we weren't paying for another failed govt program taking our taxes. Sorry, but it's just getting pathetic

Someone needs to ask the politicians on Monday how many riders have to be on the bus for them to consider it a success.

WV... You're looking at it all wrong.
What you really saw was a "job created" (bus driver) and two jobs "saved" (the riders). The stimulus is working!!!
Considering that the typical bus gets about 1/3 the gas mileage of a typical car, we didn't save the environment, we didn't save any money, but we did save two people from having to be responsible for their own transportation to work/shopping/booty call.
Thank goodness.

Normally I just bite my tounge and wonder how Chatham folks got so scared of change. This one. however, I have to wiegh in on. I guess because it is new and different lots of folks are agaist it. seems like the long term potential of savings of fuel and time and effort would make it worth the try. It has worked so many other places but I guess we are just too scared of change to consider the positive impact if some folks trying it and it catches on. Just my view, but I am really getting embarrased by my fellow citizens.

I think you have it wrong - the Chatham folks are not afraid of change. They are sick and tired of change paid for with their tax dollars, just for the sake of change or to provide for those that feel they are "entitled" to our money to pay for their necessities. It would have been cheaper for the citizens of Chatham to hire a limo and chauffeur to take these 2 individuals to their job. I am embarrased by those that think they have the right to foolishly spend OUR MONEY! They were voted in and given the right to spend our money wisely to represent the needs of ALL the citizens of Chatham. Oh and by the way - this morning there was 1 lonely rider on the bus!!

Maybe they should make the windows tinted like Chatham Transit so you can't see how many riders there are. 2 riders one day and one rider another does not look like a real profit center to me but what do I know?

We have to wait. Remember this bus is so all of those out of work Chathamites could go to Chapel Hill and get jobs. It will take a couple of weeks for them to get through the interviews, background check, etc., and then the bus will be full.

WW, did you happen to notice if the rider was Starkweather's wife? She told everyone she was looking foward to riding the bus everyday.

When I was in college I was a driver for a van that went all around Greensboro to the different campuses. Once an hour the bus visited each school to drop off and pick up riders, it was free to the students. Oh, did I mention it was a VW Vanagon? Sounds like Chapel Hill Transit needs a minivan instead of a huge bus. For the green crowd, which leaves less of a footprint, a van or a bus?

Too practical, Silk Hope! To survive in Chatham County you have to think like the federal gubmint - its only money. Just crank up the presses again, Buddy, we just need a few more trillion!
