Chatham County seeks applicants for new Board of Adjustment

Sat, 03/21/2015 - 11:20
On March 16, 2015, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners approved the creation of a Board of Adjustment that will assume the role of hearing and deciding upon appeals and variances of county land use and development regulations. In the past, the Board of Commissioners had filled the role of Board of Adjustment, but over the past year had been considering the creation of a separate board to handle these duties. The Board of Adjustment only meets as needed, usually not more than a couple of times a year.

Four good North Carolina books for the spring

Sat, 03/21/2015 - 11:15
If you are looking for an interesting book for springtime reading, I have four suggestions: A cookbook that will be fun to read. A book of stories from one of North Carolina’s rising stars. The story of a ’57 Chevy and its complicated, troubled and fascinating 13th owner who took it to Moyock in Currituck County for restoration. An award-winning story of a mother who writes letters to the son she gave up the day he was born. Here are some details.

My last penny spent at Walker Automotive NAPA in Pittsboro

Mon, 03/16/2015 - 23:14
I have shopped at the NAPA store in Pittsboro for more than forty years, since 1972, possibly before Rober Reid bought and ran it. I've traded with Archie Hackney and Curt when they worked there, and Robert's son, Rob. Robert passed away not long ago. The store was sold to Walker Automotive of Chapel Hill. I continued to trade with them out of deference and because Rob still worked there. My account did not transfer to Walker.

Citizens can stop the Chatham County Commission's push for county wide zoning

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 16:19
The new county commissioners have revived the democratic push to zone the entire county. There is a long history in Chatham of the far left wing of the democratic party trying to do this over the years. Each time the effort is tried the citizens living in the Western portion of the county have successfully fought it off. We won’t get into the entire history as it would take too long but suffice it to say, there are large areas in the rural parts of the county that are not zoned because the people who live there don’t want to be zoned.

Gene Nichol’s center had no impact on poverty

Fri, 03/06/2015 - 16:58
It’s the height of ivory tower elitism for professors to defend the UNC Center on Work, Poverty and Opportunity. It’s the height of absurdity to analogize closing the center with the censorship of E.E. Ericson and John Spencer Bassett, as Rob Christensen did in his Feb. 22 column. Everyone knows the center on poverty was contrived to give John Edwards a platform for the core message of his 2008 presidential campaign. The center traded on the prestige of the university for personal political gain, not for poverty.

Staying warm and cozy when its so dang cold outside

Fri, 02/20/2015 - 16:58
I thought I would pass what I have learned about staying warm when its so dang cold outside. My heat pump died last year so we have had to improvise. I have found that the ceramic heaters by Lasko at WalMart work really well. If you go check them out you will see smaller ones that work OK but don't waste your money on those. The largest ones are programmable to temperature, on times and off times and some even oscillate.

Low-income children, high performing schools

Fri, 02/20/2015 - 16:50
Since the release of grades based on the state's new school performance grade system, the mainstream media and liberal advocacy organizations have focused on the number of low-income schools that received a D or F. If they weren't so hell-bent on criticizing and ridiculing Republican education policies, they would celebrate the outstanding achievements of the 150 low-income public schools that earned an A or B.

A cellular hotspot is not a substitute for a real broadband plan

Thu, 02/19/2015 - 00:52
When you have a device like a Dish Hopper or an iPad or even a Windows or Macintosh computer attached to the network, they are usually programmed to do large downloads in the background (like Windows/MacOS updates or Netflix previews or dropbox synching if you use that service) when attached to WiFi. All these devices assume that being on WiFi means you're on broadband with unlimited data. If you use a Verizon hotspot or similar device with data caps to provide your WiFi, your devices do not know this and can suck your data plan dry in no time.
